ADJECTIVE USED AS NOUN

Kata Sifat Yang Digunakan Sebagai Kata Benda

Sebuah kata sifat dapat dipakai untuk sebuah kata benda demi kepentingan keringkasannya.

Perubahan dari kata sifat ke kata benda adalah sempurna, apabila kata itu dapat dipakai dalam bentuk jamak atau dalam kasus genitif. Perubahan yang demikian adalah sempurna, karena sifat tidak menggunakan akhiran kasus genitif.

Contoh: Nobles = noblemen or noble men (orang bangsawan)

A noble’ house = a nobleman’s house (sebuah rumah milik orang bangsawan)

Dalam menggunakan proper adjective (kata sifat nama diri) untuk menunjukkan bahasa tertentu, tiada kata sandang diletakkan di depannya, dan tiada kata benda yang dinyatakan.

Contoh: He speaks English very well. Ia berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan baik sekali

He speaks Persian. Ia berbicara bahasa Persia/Iran

Sebagian kata sifat dipakai sebagai kata benda dalam bentuk tunggal saja, sebagian dalam bentuk jamak saja, dan sebagian dalam bentuk tunggal dan jamak.

1) Bentuk tunggal saja

the whole = keseluruhan

a solid = suatu benda padat (tunggal) – solids = benda-benda padat (jamak)

Participles (partisip, yang sebenarnya merupakan verbal adjectives = kata kerja yang berfungsi

sebagai kata sifat) kadang-kadang dipakai sebagai kata benda dalam bentuk jamak, seperti kata

sifat biasa dipakai sebagai kata benda:

Contoh: I’m much pleased with my surroundings. Saya sangat senang dengan keadaan sekeliling saya

Ada ungkapan-ungkapan bahasa sehari-hari atau idiom tertentu dimana kata-kata sifat berpasang-pasangan, kata benda tertentu setelah kata-kata sifat itu dimengerti.

Contoh:

from bad to worse (from a bad state to a worse one) = dari keadaan buruk ke keadaan yang lebih

buruk black and blue = babak belur

Kata sifat yang didahului oleh the mempunyai fungsi sebagai :

a) Sebagai kata benda umum (common noun) yang menunjukkan pada orang-orang saja, dan biasanya dalam pengertian jamak/plural

Contoh:

the brave (these men who are brave) = orang yang berani, kaum pemberani

the rich (those men who are rich) = kaum kaya

the poor = kaum miskin, orang yang melarat

b) Sebagai kata benda abstrak (abstrak noun), dalam pengertian tunggal/singular

Contoh:

the good (that quality which is good = goodness in general) = kebaikan, kebajikan pada umumnya

the beautiful (beauty in general) = kecantikan pada umumnya

the true (truth in general) = kebenaran pada umumnya

c) Sebagai nama untuk bagian khusus tertentu dari sebuah benda

1) Menghilangkan subjek dari dependent Clause dan verb (be).

Contoh:

a. ADVERB CLAUSE : While I was walking to class, I ran into an old friend.

b. MODIFYING PHRASE : While walking to class, I ran into an old friend.

2) Jika dalam Adverb Clause tidak ada be, hilangkanlah subjek dan ubahlah verb dalam Adverb Clause itu menjadi bentuk -ing.

Contoh:

a. ADVERB CLAUSE : Before I left for work, I ate breakfast.

b. MODIFYING PHRASE : Before leaving for work, I ate breakfast.

Adverb Clause dapat diubah menjadi Modifying Phrase jika subjek dari adverb Clause dan subjek dari main Clause sama.
